Prevaling Winds

This diagram shows the wind direction of the Easterlies, Westerlies, and Trade Winds
Prevaling winds include the Westerlies, Trade Winds, and Polar Easterlies. The Westerlies air direction is west to east. The Easterlies air direction is east to west. Basically they get their name from from the direction of the air direction. If the wind at a subtropical high blows from Northeast, the wind is called Northeast Trade Winds. If the wind blows from Southeast, the wind is called Southeast Trade Winds. Trade Winds get their name by being able to propel ships across the ocean.
